  • Layers arrive at same point at certain time but start from random point

    Hi everyone,

long time observer/reader of C.Cow but finally made an account because I can’t find my answer…

I basically have loads of pins that land on a map and I can animate them to all land at the same time however they all “drop” together in unison (they only move in the “Y” plane). However I would like them all to land in their position but at random times but they would all need to be in position after a set time. ( I made the map and pins in illustrator and released them all to layers and so they would all arrive at the same value (in this case 340)).

I’m happy to explore the answer with the use of keyframes or expressions.

Hope that it is all clear.
    Thanks guys

We could write an expression that randomizes the timing of the animation a bit, but that can make tweaking or art directing the results quite difficult.

Another workflow to consider is setting the keyframing for one, copying to all the rest, then staggering the layers in time a bit.

I’d suggest you take a look at Michael Delaney’s excellent Rift script [link]. This will let you easily manipulate the timing of the layers.

You could also shuffle the layers a bit vertically in the composite to add an element of randomness and then use the Sequence layers keyframe assistant [link] to stagger them.

Sorry, re-reading the subject of the thread and your post has left me a bit confused.

I get that you want all the pins to start at different times, but do you want them all to land at the same time, or do you want them all to have landed by a specific time?

Either option would be welcome at this point!

In response to your first post I have over 100 layers so doing it manually would be quite tiresome.

Rift seems like a good option however it involves money!
