  • 3D Digital Timer in After Effects

Hey there. I’m doing a current music video project, and working with the Adobe suite. What I need is for a digital timer to appear above a characters head, and move with the character. The timer would always be facing the characters direction, so it would need 3d properties. My question is: where could I find a preanimated one or how could I animate one myself, and how would I add this into my video with 3d capabilities preferrably without keyframes. If anyone could help, or if theres a tutorial somewhere on the net or at cow, it would be greatly appreciated.

If you want the timer to have thicnkness/depth to it you might want to use this tutorial for A.E. https://forums.creativecow.net/cgi-bin/page_wrapper.cgi?forumid=2&page=https://www.creativecow.net/articles/woodall_traylor/3dtypetut2/index.html

So you would make you timer first then apply what was learned from the tutorial.
Add some other looks and other effects to achieve the look you want 3d wise.

Then you would motion track the guys head and rotate the timer when he looks around. It will be allot of work but it can be done this way with A.E.

yes, I’ve shot some footage, and it involves the subject moving her head. I know how to use the camera layer, but I’m confused on how to make a digital countdown timer, and how to track it to the subjects head in 3D.

You might be able to ask Dan Ebberts for an expression(which I think if you do a search you might just find that expression). On the tracking, You want to track the x,y then just begin to put down rotation keyframes. There is a way to track for z position but if the face is going from seen to unseen all the time(like turning around and so forth)then you just have to do it manually.
