  • Best way to leave myself instructions inside a comp?

Getting long of tooth and short of wisdom, I find I’m making text notes to myself on what I’m doing (seems like I’m often trying something new or working through an expression thing and copying the text from say a Cow Post into my Comp is very helpful for when I come back in a few months and have forgotten exactly what I’ve done).

Well my question is, “Is there any easy way to tie text files into AE that show up in/with my comp. I know about the comment column, but unless I’m missing something its usless for more than a short line. I’ve settled on leaving myself instructions/notes with the Text Tool (making its own layer, say white text on the usual black background). That works pretty good for a short page’s worth depending on the size of the comp. Anyone have a better solution?

I’ve always wanted something like that, but I’ve settled on using the text tool in a comp as well. I think that being able to add a printable text-file-ish object to the Project window, like a new solid, would be useful.

In your timeline view, just right-click the bar where you see “source name” or “layer name”. You’ll get a pop-up – select “columns” then “comment”. There’s a comment field now available for every layer in your comp.

You can now choose to hide or reveal these layer notes to refresh your memory, or if you need to pass the project on to another user, to clue them in to your intentions.

You can also use the text tool and type as much information as you’d like, then right click the layer name and select guide layer. This way you can leave the text right where it will be the most helpful to you, and you don’t have to worry about seeing it in your final output (guide layers do not render, even if the eye switch is left on in the comp).

    Hope that helps!

What I do is add a marker to a layer(press the * key) and then right click on it and go to settings and add some text to it. This is useful if you don’t need to include a ton of instructions.
