  After Effects – double nesting comps

  Hi, im creating a rolling demo of a nevigation system. I have created several nesting comps, now i need the focus (coloured) background to change on several of the buttons(switching on and off), text colour will also need to change. I have two options, the first having to created a duplicate comp edit that and do some nasty masking to give the impression of movement and the second would be to write an expression targeting the nested comp and either moving the focus and changing the text colour or just controling the playhead to goto a desired frame from the root/main timeline comp.

  Can i target a comp thats nested inside another nested comp? How do i make the nested playhead stop or loop? How would i set a position of a double nexted comp layer via a expression.

  Any advice would be brilliaint, my head hurts.

  ALlthough I’m sortof unclear as to what you are asking I think I can help you with a few of your questions:
  -Expressions CAN be used across comps, such as in this example where a layer acesses the position parameter of “layer two” located in “other comp”

  comp(“other comp”).layer(“layer two”).position

  -Im not sure what you mean by “making the playhead move” but you can access parameters at specified times by using the method valueAtTime( t ). Here is an example of how to acess the position parameter of “layer two” in “other comp” at a time that is .1 seconds less than that in the current comp

  comp(“other comp”).layer(“layer two”).position.valueAtTime(time – .1)

  Sorry, i didn’t rell phase my quesiton very well. What a basicly need to do is time remap a double nested comp from a null object in the main comp. Does this make more sence? I’m not even sure if this is possible, as far as i can see the AtTime propertys are read only and can send a timeramp command from another comp to another. It this right?

  unfortunately, you can’t really time remap something from something else, because expressions can only modify the parameter they are assigned to .
