can’t I open my AE project. when trying to open it, before its completely open the internal HD goes from 20 gig free to 0 free, then it says can’t open library with no space left. but I do not use the internal drive for any disk cache, i use a 2 tb external. and the cache is set to only 5 gigs. any ideas??
(using AE cc on a 2013 MacBook Pro with 16gb ram)

Try importing that project file into a brand new project.
Try opening a previous version of that project (you are using incremental saving practices, right?)

importing into a new one did the same. But the project does work when its on an external drive with a lot of space. other early auto saved versions also are doing the same thing.

What exact version number of AE is it (including all the decimals)?

You could try updating. The current version is 12.2.1.5
You could also try trashing your preferences.
