Firstly, my apologies if this has been covered – I’m not finding anything on the forums, but that is probably more down to my ability to ‘google’ the right thing.

Looking for an external hard drive to be solely used as the render drive for AE. The Mac Pro we’ve ordered has a 500GB internal drive.

    Any recommendations?

Also, We figure it’s best to have the external drive as the render drive and not the other way around, although happy for thoughts on this!

    Kind regards,

For After Effects, you’ll also want to have an SSD drive that’s separate from your boot drive on your Mac Pro for a cache drive.

Depending on how large your projects are, a render drive could be an SSD hooked up to a Thunderbolt dock like the Rocket Store one, or it could be a RAID setup as well.

For my AE and C4D projects, I use an all SSD system.

I have an SSD boot drive where my programs all reside.
An SSD for my cache and that’s all it’s for.
An SSD for my projects/render drive.

I have an older Mac Pro, 2010 and use an eSata dock that’s sata6 and it works really well.

    Hope this helps.

Yes, brilliant – same set-up as the PC. So we ideally need as SSD with thunderbolt. I’ll see what’s available in the UK as no doubt different from the states in many cases!
