Create a 3d Map with GPX data
hi guys,
after years of watching tutorials and reading lots of helpful stuff in the forum, i’m finally at the point where i can’t find an answer to a problem i have at the moment.
i would like to create a 3d (or at least 3d looking) grafic out of gps files to illustrate and elevation profile.
this picture explains what i’d like to do nicely.
if any of you have an idea, how to create this sort of grafic, i’d be the happiest men in the universe!

I believe you’re going to need a 3D package to do this (I use 3DS Max, and it imports all sorts of digital elevations maps). You might give Google Earth a try – supposedly you can input GPS coordinates, but I don’t know about elevation, which it appears you’ll be needing. Looks as if Google Earth might do the job:

And Ae CC ships with one — C4D Lite.
You could also pull this off with Mettle FreeForm. Tudor Jelescu has some great FreeForm tutorials here on the COW that may help.

I’m not so sure that’s the answer, Walter. He’s looking to import GPS data to create the graphic, which to me implies an elevation point cloud of some sort (or something akin to that). While I’m not sure whether the Lite version of C4D will import digital elevation maps of any sort, it appears that the full version will with a third party plugin:

It might require converting the GPS data to DEM format, but there are loads of free converter packages out there which would probably do the trick.
And if total accuracy isn’t necessary, then Mettle Freeform would certainly be up to the task.

Of course you are correct. I got distracted by the shiny picture that Emanuael posted, and glossed over the entire point of his post, which was using existing data! My apologies.

You might not need the full version to use the plugin. It might be worth checking with the developer if C4D Lite is also supported

@joseph: google earth is definately a possible way, but i’d like it to look a bit different and to adjust the path.
3DS MAX or C4D sounds like the way to go!thanks again for your input, that’ll definately lead me to the right direction, i’ll keep you posted on the progress 🙂
