    That’s a Film Burn effect. Google and you should find quite a few legitimate sites that offer these as free downloads.

    Or you could custom roll your own, using a short (maybe a second, to taste) overlaid layer – solid, or adjustment layer, straddling the cut, then playing with opacity, blending mode, whatever – animating it if you like. Is it better than a cut, though …
