Text animation on one character at a time – how to?
Posted by Guilherme Oliveira on December 4, 2013 at 6:50 pmHi everyone,
I animated a text shootout using a few rotation, position and scale text animation keyframes but my problem is that it happens on each letter individually but on all letters at the same time and I can’t get it to animate one character at a time. I need this animation to happen just to one letter and once it is finished the next letter starts animating.
Here’s my animation keyframes: https://i.imgur.com/dKqmAWm.png
How do I make it loop for each letter individually?
EDIT: Here’s a sample of my project 6865_textpopping.aep.zip

December 4, 2013 at 7:20 pmTo animate individual characters you need to use the range selector.
Here are some great tutorials on using the Text Animators and Selectors at the bottom of the list.

December 4, 2013 at 7:42 pmI understand what you are suggesting and tried that but maybe i’m doing something wrong. Let me explain to you
If I set my start range selector to 0 and my end to 2 I get just ONE letter, if I leave it like that the animation will run on that letter perfectly but when I use the offset to move to the following letter the animation already happened because it’s keyframed, to be more exactly the animation happens between keyframes 0 and 27, on frame 28 (which would be the frame where the second letter would start the animation) there are no more keyframes.
Also using the method above all my letters are visible from the start of the animation, I want them to grow one at a time (thats why I animated scale from 0 to 107 to 98 to 100%

December 4, 2013 at 7:52 pmIf you animation is going from (-20,20) to (0,0). Then you wouldn’t need to keyframe it, you could set the initial parameter then use the offset(or start/end) and it will move from the first position to the default(0,0).

December 5, 2013 at 12:22 amYou are right but it doesnt go directly from -20 to 0, it “bounces” a few times to give the shootout effect, plus there’s the scale and rotation keyframes.
I’m really lost on how to make this work for each letter since there are 4 values going on for each attribute =/

December 5, 2013 at 1:56 amIs this what you want?
Sample file:
6863_onecharacteratatime.aep.zip
If so, you need to change the Shape of the animation to Ramp Up.

December 5, 2013 at 2:03 pmCheck out this free preset Amortype 2.0. It will pretty much do exactly what you want, just drop it on the text and adjust a few of sliders and you are done. Watch the tutorial though, there’s a bit to it.
