November 8, 2013 at 10:19 pmA bit of searching indicates that this is a plug-in error, typically Trapcode Form (or Particular).
While I have do both installed, they are up-to-date versions and the project I was working on used neither of them.
It contained exactly 1 shape layer with 2 groups, one containing a path and the other an ellipse.
The project I had been working on previously did use Particular, so perhaps this has to do with a persistent cache or …?

November 8, 2013 at 11:20 pmIt’s a sign of a badly written effect plug-in. Effect plug-ins check layer content out to work on and then check it back in when it has been processed. “Unbalanced layer checkouts” indicates that this is not being done correctly.
I’m going to guess that it’s a third-party effect plug-in, but certainly let us know if you find that it’s one of ours.
