exporting flv files
Posted by James on September 20, 2005 at 2:08 pmI have created a web intro in AE and am now trying to export an flv file. It exports fine at the stock settings but dosnt look so great in Flash – so when I alter the settings in AE for better quality output it crashes my AE. The AE file is 11sec long and I have a legit version of AE 6.5 Professional. Any help…?

September 20, 2005 at 3:51 pmI’m guessing you’re embedding the FLV in your flash movie? What’s happening is that Flash is compressing the animation again when it creates the SWF, to maintain the quality of your original FLV export you’ll want to link the FLV instead of embedding it. Lee Brimelow’s tutorials in the Flash section have some great info there.

September 20, 2005 at 3:52 pmI suggest that you render out from AE using a high quality intermediate file – something like QTs Animation CODEC, with a quality setting of 92%-98%. Then use Flash’s builtin CODEC for the compression.
BTW, Flash8 has a great CODEC to work with.

September 20, 2005 at 4:00 pmright, but thats the problem… when i try to render out flv file from AE – it crashes my AE. im not having any problems bringing it into flash, the problem lies within AE. when i adjust the settings in the export window and hit render – my AE quits out…

September 20, 2005 at 4:05 pmDuh! So render out a high quality Quicktime from AE – avoid the .flv export from AE.

September 20, 2005 at 8:25 pmWorse comes to worse and you can budget for it you can make the $99 investment in Sorenson Squeeze…it makes better FLVs than After Effects even if it was working.

September 21, 2005 at 5:10 amFlash gives you an option to convert an .mov to .flv when you import the footage. Won’t that work?

May 9, 2006 at 1:51 amHey folks,
I found this thread, and I’m having the same problem. I have Sorenson Compression Suite and of course can do a “double hop” to get from AE to .flv, but no one has been able to answer the question surrounding AE crashing when trying to export directly to FLV.
Does anyone know about this at Adobe, has anyone else experienced this (besides James and I) and if so, what’s the fix, if any? I’d hate to think the fix was to go buy Sorenson Compression suite…
And by the way, you don’t need flash to work with FLV files necessarily.
