Branding or burning effect. How do I do it?
I’m getting ready to work on a project with a western theme, and the logo the client sent over has a very “wanted sign” look to it. I thought it may be neat to try doing an effect that looks like the logo is being branded into a hide. Rather than create a 3D branding iron, I thought I would try to make the logo appear by being burnt into paper, or wood or some other texture. Any ideas on how to make the elements of the logo burn

Well, if possible I’d avoid the actual flames since they might come out looking very cheesy.
For the logo to appear as it’s burned in you could try a combination of Simple Choker (if the logo is on a transparent background), and Roughen Edges. Animate the choke amount down to 0 over time, and play around with Roughen Edges to give it a more organic feel.
The next step could be adding some smoke. Smoke is a tough effect to create digitally, but I’ve had some decent results playing around with Fractal Noise, using the Whispy Smoke setting, and applying CC Vector Blur to it – and playing around with masks.
Well, that could be a start.
