Firewire out from HDX900
Hi there
Is it possible to record to tape and record to a laptop via firewire at the same time?
The laptop has FC pro.. and 400 to 800 cable.. is that enough? how much HD space is needed per 30min tape?

Yes, the Firewire works at the same time while recording to tape. The FW tap on the camera is only FW400. So, you only need a FW400-FW400 cable. At 720p/60 it would require approx 25GB/30min. Less for 24f or 30f. At 1080i/60 it would use about 60GB/30 min.

Thanks as usual for your advise.So what is the procedure.. I read that the cable should be plugged in from camera to laptop before each is powered up.. is that true?
Does the the lap top have to be set to “record” .. capture? (there will be an editor there,but I dont think he has done this before either)
Or can you just plug in and go?

I always connect all pieces before powering up. Yeah, there was some posts about surge issues plugging-in while hot.
It’s easy to have FCP to record the HDX900 FW signal. Just open FCP, use Easy Setup, pick you settings and go to Log & Capture. The camera appears ready to record.
What are you using for storage? In my MacBook Pro, I have a eSATA card running to a small 2-drive external RAID. Works perfectly.

There always seems to be confusion about HDX/Varicam settings.. have never done that side of it.. so say iam shooting 720p /59.94 30p. .. FCP is set to 720p/59.94 60p.. (not 30p).. or if 1080i/60i ..30p FCP would be set to 60i and not 25p..does that make sense..????
Its a new Mac pro with 8 pin FW.. so there is a 400 to 800 cable???

If you are shooting at 720p/59.94 30fps, you can choose to edit at either DVCProHD720/30 or 60. I edit at 720p/30 all the time. And on 1080i projects, you would never set it to 1080i/25p as that is a PAL format. You would only edit at DVCPro1080i/60.
Those are the easy FW native formats, some editors work in different formats like ProRes and import footage thru HD-SDI. But, with Firewire, the DVCProHD codecs look pretty nice.

thanks again for the info.. you are legend ..
so in 720p can chose 30p.. doesnt have to be 60p.. but with 1080i .. say Iam set 1080i/59.94 30p
the FCP setting must be 60i.. as the camera is recording 60i.. not actually 30p..thanks again.. shoot is tomorrow!

I know it’s a bit confusing, but, If you shoot 720p/30, you can edit in 720p/30 or 60. 30 Saves space while digitizing too. If shooting at 1080i/30p you have 2 choice for editing. DVCProHD1080i/30p or 60i.
Personally, I’ve liked shooting at 720p/30 and 720p/24 instead of 1080i and doing any up-conversion after editing. Not that I’ve noticed any artifacting in camera, but editing is easier and saves space.
Oh, remember to set the camera shutter to 1/2 while shooting 30p.

Ok many thanks…yes I always use the half shutter.. but thanks for the reminder.. When camera is set to 1080i/59.94 30p.. for example.. the camera is actually recording 60i is it not..and changing to 30p by some internal wizardry ..?

Yes, it’s recording at 59.94 even if you shoot 1080i/30p. That’s sounds goofy, but yeah, it’s doing internal conversion.

What about 720p.. is say 30p true 30p or 60p internally converted to 30p?
