Package lens for HDX900 or Canon?
Ok, so we’re ordering our HDX900 this week to take advantage of Panasonic’s sweet 17″ monitor deal, but still a bit undecided about the lens. I’ve done quite a bit of searching through the forum regarding favorite lenses for the 900, and two that really stuck out were the Fujinon HA16X6.3ERM and the Canon HJ17EX7.6B-IRSD.
We can get a decent deal on the Fuji lens and love the wide angle characteristics of the lens, but are concerned about the lens’ huge 107mm filter size. Our current matte box can go up to 105mm, so that means we have to buy a new matte box!
The Canon lens got some good reviews and we like it’s 85mm filter size. But, will the lens just be a Canon version of the Fujinon XA17X7.6BERM lens that comes in the package with the HDX900? Or does it have better optics/performance than the Fuji package lens?
We’ve used the XA17X7.6BERM on a multi-day shoot with an HDX900 and were pleased with the results. We just don’t want to end up shooting ourselves in the foot by getting the package Fujinon lens when there could be something a bit better for not a lot more money!
Anyone’s advise/experience on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help!

I went with the Fuji 4.5×13. Wide is the only way to go. I use the wider end 90% of the time. I get asked for that lens more than anything. glad I got it!

I looked at the specs on the HA16X6.3ERM. Although they list the filter diameter at 107mm that is the filter size that must fit into the hood. It looks to me that the actual front diameter is 95mm, so your matte box will probably work.
I would vote with the others and at least look at the 13×4.5, I love the wide side.

I just purchaed the Fuji HA16X6.3BERM. It is a sweet piece of glass. The nice thing about it is that you have the 6.3 but you also can zoom to 101. Granted the 4.5 is wider but it only zooms to 59. It really depends on what you are doing, but I think that the 16×6.3 is a great all around lens.

The 4.5 also has a 2x.
