HDX 900 settings
Posted by Robin Probyn on June 10, 2007 at 7:20 amHi there
Just wondering if any of the HDX owners/frequent users out there, have any views about using the camera in film 1 mode as opposed to HD mode.
And also if their are any strong pro,s or cons about shooting 1080i or 720p,or is this mainly dependant on editing systems? Thanks

June 10, 2007 at 1:16 pmI’ll answer the second half of your question. 720p is terrific for slow motion since it is progressive versus interlaced.
We did a beauty piece where everything was shot 720p at 60 and then resolved down to 30.
No vertical hop that you get with an interlace project when slowed down.
The images were fluid and almost surreal!Later,

June 10, 2007 at 1:35 pmHi Ray
Thanks, the camera can only do 60p in 720p mode? is that right?Do you usualy shoot straight HD mode or any of the film modes.I know it often depends on the project, but wondered if there was a general concenus on which looked better for all purpose doco shooting.

June 11, 2007 at 12:26 amForgot to ask,did you use the half shutter setting for the 60p to slo-mo?

June 11, 2007 at 2:30 amIf the slomo is to mimic that created by a motion picture camera, then yes, you’ll want to use the equivilent of a 180 degree shutter aka “half”.

June 11, 2007 at 3:23 pmWhen I mentioned surreal, I was refering to the lack of interlace vertical hop. I have been doing slow motion replays for football for ten years and it was always interlaced.
Progressive slow motion is as smooth as 12 year old Scotch. Surreal may be an overstatement… How about “Way cool”.Ray Palmer, Engineer

June 11, 2007 at 9:29 pmOk thanks! see what you mean, thought you might have been referring to some amazing effect! Do you shoot in the straight HD mode,as oppossed to film like modes.Or what are your thoughts between the two.
Thanks
