I just bought a Panasonic TH-42PH9UK 42″ Professional Plasma Display. The purpose of the purchase was to have a nice monitor to screen HD and SD footage with clients. Despite having read the instructions, I cannot find a way to view SD DVDs using the full screen (16:9) without some degree of distortion (either stretching or magnification). The DVD player is hooked up with component cables. Anyone have familiarity with this product or issue? Your thoughts are welcome!

    North,

My suspicion is that the DVD’s you’re trying to view are not “native” 16×9; that is the picture is not “squeezed” in order to be “stretched out” on a widescreen set. This is probably because they were created in an era when there were few if any native widescreen sets in the field. Sometimes more modern DVD’s have the option of 4×3 (non-squeezed) or 16×9 (squeezed) versions on the same disc, assuming there is enough room to do so.

I’m sure you’ll find that if you imput a proper 16×9 source, such as a Varicam, HVX200 or HDX900, that it will fill the screen properly. It is therefore not a problem with your new monitor but rather with the source material you’re trying to view. Try one of the new HD-DVD’s or Blue Ray DVD’s , I’ll bet they work just fine!

John, thanks for your advice. The DVDs I have been playing back on the plasma display are recent–including a SD down conversion of an 8-camera Varicam show I recently did–but do not fill the screen without distortion. These same DVDs do fill the screen on my SD JVC plasma display. Again, I am coming into the display analogue component. And yes, I have no doubt that an HD clip will fill the screen properly. I tried this with a Sony Z1 and it looked stunning and filled the screen without stretching or magnification. So the issue for me is just with SD DVDs. Any other suggestions or observations?
