DigiPrime test vs Pro35
Posted by Moshdaddy on May 30, 2006 at 4:56 amDoes anyone know of any tests that can be viewed online where someone has compared DigiPrimes to any set of comparable lenses on the Pro35 set-up?
Thanks,
Mosh

May 30, 2006 at 2:38 pmI don’t know where you can view it online, but was a pretty comprehesive test shot by Jon Fauer a while back. You can request one from the ZGC website:

Follow the links to the Pro35 page and there’s a link in the testimonials section.
It’s worth viewing! Also, it may be available online somewhere.

May 30, 2006 at 2:48 pmIf you are looking to compare MTF between the two systems the digi primes win hands down.
The only reason for shooting with the Pro35 is the creative need to establish a shallower depth of field but at the expense of 2 stops of light lost, slight noise (due to shooting the spinning ground glass), softer overall look.
I do like the look of the Pro 35 when it is used correctly but I also love the digi primes.

But it is basic the amount of aberrations/ imperfections any lens shows based on a given aperture.
Usually the more you stop down on the aperture the more problems arise in aligning the red/green/blue colors as all of these colors focus at different points on the imager due to their respective wavelengths.the vast majority of lenses are engineered to work at the highest quality @ 1-3 stops down from wide open.

FWIW, I directed a short a while back and used the mini35 with the XL1. It looks like I may be directing something in the future with the Varicam. I really like the look of the shallow depth of field. I did notice that if the lens wasn’t spinning on the mini35 that it didn’t make too much of a difference, and I wonder how much noise it put or did not put into the picture. I am wondering what it may look like to cut between the DigiPrimes and the Pro35? And how it will look like outputted to film. I wonder if I can just shoot one indoor scene in particular with the Pro35 at a shallow depth of field and it will look okay…..just my musings.
Here’s a link to my short done with the mini35 if anyone is interested. It’s has adult themes and language so be forewarned:
