720p24 to 1080p24?
Anyone have experience upconverting 720p24 to 1080p24?
I’m onlining a project shot on the Varicam on an Avid DS. Learned that the DS won’t take a 720p24 EDL. We’re using the Panny 1700 HD deck and planning to upconvert through it. This is a movie and needs to be kept at the highest quality. I’m pretty sure a Teranex would be the best route, but one is not available in this workflow scenario. Is the upconvert from the 1700 deck good?

you will be fine, Teranex is the best up-conversion available, the UC chip set does offer a viable solution for a large majority of users.

When you say “UC chipset”, is this referring to the 1700 deck? I’m not familar with that term. I’m an editor not an engineer. 🙂

it is actually referring to the Universal Converter chips that are used by virtually all companies that perform up-conversions via hardware. Panasonic, AJA, and Sony all use similar chips to perform the up and down conversions.
That’s why almost all of the hardware solutions get the similar results until you factor in the software functions.
