Hi all.
Has anyone out there heard any rumours of 25FPS support being added to FCP for use with the Varicam? Any whispers of an approaching release? Anyone?…Bueller?…Bueller?

As i heard from Panasonic Switzerland, this gona last till next year. The PAL-Formats are not yet SMPTE certified and it will not be certified in this year. So Apple and Panasonic will not create any presets before this gona happen. I know from the Kona support, that they have a lot of request on this issue and that their ingeneers already work on it.
However it is possible working with 720p25 over 59.94/60 in FCP. You need to create your own presets.

Can you do a preset that will ingest via firewire at 25P? I’m possible doing an ad on Tuesday that would be great on the Varicam, especially if I could do the post too at 25FPS. I’ve only managed to do 59.94 and then frame convert to 23.98 in FCP

NO. 25fps in not a “native” frame rate on the varicam and is not addressable over FW.
the only frame rates available over FW are
23.98, 24, 29.97, 30, 59.94, & 60 (and those depend on whether the camera is set to 59.94\60 hz respectively)Gary Adcock

I am going to start cutting a project on FCP5 in Dubai, shot on the varicam at 720p25p. I would like some advise on the workflow. Like which drives to buy, coz at 25p FW is not supported. I would also like info about specific presets to capture the footage using the blackmagic card.
Also if i shoot at 720p24p instead of 720p25p and go via FW what problems will i face in a PAL world. Would 720p24p be preferrable than shooting at 720p25p, expense wise and ease in workflow? This is going to be used for braodcast. Since there are no HD broadcasters here, my master will be a digibeta. Please advise. Thank You. -

The main issue is sound. If you are able to work cutting in 24FPS and then convert your final back to 25FPS then the Firewire option is good for cost and ease. I have done a few PAL projects where I was able to work at 24FPS and then do a final output that was retimed to 25FPS but I was working with material that wasn’t critical for sync. I slowed my sound clips before cutting (they were not from the shoot) and cut to that, then retimed the video and replaced the sound with the original. This can be a pain of course.
If you are outputting to DigiBeta and are able to afford the outlay or hire of decks and RAID drives and a good Blackmagic card then it would be simpler to work in a BM preset (there is a specific 720P 25FPS Varicam 10 bit one) and capture via the card and stay in that system throughout.

Thanks Dale. This makes things a alot clearer for me. I’m going to have to to go the BM way, coz we have interviews and sound sync is crucial to our work. Would you be able to suggest in particular what RAID drives I should invest in and approximately how much storage space I would require and the kind of connection fibre channel, or SCSI or anything else?

I recently finished a project shot on varicam at 25p. We worked with avid, but it should be the same on fcp. If you only need a digibeta master you can set the 1200 deck to output a downconverted PAL 25p signal on the SDI output. The quality is perfect for a PAL master and you can work with firewire800 drives. You could then still do an online in HD quality later if you need it. The good thing on the 1200 deck is that it up- or downconverts footage shot at 25p over 60p to Pal 25p or 1080 25p and outputs it on the SDI or HDSDI.
