    Hello-

I’m preparing to online a movie shot with the Varicam. We’re using an Avid DS system with the Panasonic AJ-HD1700 deck. The movie was shot in 24P. We are not planning to output to film and will want a 1080i master on D5 or HDCAM.

My question is: Should we online in uncompressed 720p – output to tape – then go to 1080i via a TERANEX? Or should we bring the footage into the DS 1080i straight from the DECK? I just am not sure if it would be cleaner to up it to 1080i through the Teranex?

    Thanks!

    Blake,

Some broadcasters (if you are going the broadcast route) actually will specify terranax as the acceptable upconvert of 720P footage. I have seen very clean results through my KONA 2 card since they have released new drivers.

The only thing I can say is test a small piece.

Test one: 720P online to Terranax 1080i
Test Two: 1080i Upconvert from Panny deck
Test three: 720P capture to KONA 2 Upconvert

Look at the results on a very large screen through a High quality digital projector if you can, that is where all of the blemishes will show (interlacing etc.

Tests are worth the money if you end up loosing a sale because of the process you choose.

Thanks for the info. We are wanting it to be “HD broadcast” quality. Doing a test is probably a good idea.

    Appreciatively,

there is less wear and tear on your system to work in 720 and then deliver in 1080i – less storage and you stay progressive until you need to tear it apart.

Blake -also the varicam is “HD broadcast quality” and many of the networks are starting to take DVCProHD tapes.

That’s kind of what I thought. We’ll probably go this route.

    Thanks!
