I am looking to purchase a Tri-level sync generator. Are there any suggestions on what works?

    Ray,

When I was faced with this issue, I was also concerned about distributing the sync, time code and video (both HD-SDI and downconverted NTSC for monitoring). After considerable research I purchased an Evertz frame and all these cards which fit inside; it’s become my HD infrastructure and eventually anyone who is doing multicam HD production will need these things, either you can piecemeal them or come up with a neater systems type solution!

    John,
Thanks for the post. Maybe I should describe my challenge and why I think a tri-level sync generator might help.
In our HD suite, we have the FCP 4.5 and the 1200A using the firewire path to and from the 1200A but monitoring via the analog HD on the output of the 1200A.
    We have two challenges
    1) We don’t have the HD-SDI card for the 1200A. It is ordered and it should be here in a few weeks.
2)When we layback to tape, the analog output will take a sync hit and flash or jump every few seconds.
We don’t have a master sync generator other than a Black Burst Generator, and it is my hope that if we reference the deck and the Black majic Deck link with tri-level sync, that we might not experience the problem.

I posted this on the Cow in the FCP forum, however it really is a Panasonic HD100 question.

The Evertz 5600MSC can output tri level as well as black burst. It also can act as a master timecode generator and output 23.98 and 29.97 cross converted timecode. The latter only matters when shooting native 23.98 such as HDCAM.
The sync outputs can be set to 720 or 1080.

The unit is great for multicam field production work.

    Ray,

I’m not sure that what you’re describing is a sync issue! Others have reported similar monitoring problems using the 1200A in the edit room situation. I think it’s a deck/FCP issue. Please let us know if you’re able to solve it.
