Can anybody refer me to any resouces, books articles or such, for guidelines for shooting at various frame rates. I am going to be shooting a variety of subjects with motion and want to do some “motion effects” but am looking for some guidelines to help narrow the range of what I am shooting.

For example, if I am going to shoot a ballet dancer, what will the basic differences be betwen 12, 24 & 48 fps. Also what will the “motion effect” at these various rates look like if I slow down or speed up the footage in post?

I also plan on shooting traffic, sports and some nature footage.

Any thoughts or references are appreciated.

There is no “correct” answer; you’re talking about art. Your own preference rules.

Fortunately, you can see, in real time, the effect of all under-cranked shots on the monitor or LCD as you shoot. This is also true of over-cranking if you are not going to slow motion the footage. What you see with the VariCam is exactly what you get.

For dance, I frequently use 4 fps, but you should simply rack through the rates and use what seems right for the trail effect and tempo you want.

    Good shooting!
