An AF100 Quirk
Just tested an AF100. Nice little camera. One issue I had… you can’t shoot VFR if you’re using the SDI out to a monitor. Does this seem logical? To me it doesn’t… anyone?

Yeah how is that the AF’s fault? Live VFR= non standard SDI frame rates…

Panasonic guru, Barry Green, has confirmed that you can use VFR to shoot 1080 60P with the AF-100 and use an external SDI recorder to record the audio tracks.
The footage that would normally be 24P slow-motion has to be conformed to a 60P video track in your editor, and then you would add the external audio track.
Sure it’s a little bit of a hassle, but it means 1080 60P shooting with the AF-100!

No, the problem is that the AF100 (unlike other cameras) shoots VFR in 1080p60. That would require 3G SDI which most of the video world isn’t ready for yet.
It’s a shame they didn’t put 3G SDI out, but i guess what would one expect for such an affordable camera?

I think Jeremy is right. If you are shooting 1080, you can’t get 1080p60/50 out of the SDI.
This shouldn’t be an issue at 720p, as its happens with other cameras (EX).

AF does not shoot offspeed in 720.

Or 1080i, from what I remember. Don’t have the camera any longer. I’m pretty sure that it had to be in 1080P only…

Correct. VFR is 1080p only on the AF100. 1080i wouldn’t make any sense. VFR works in 1080p60 just like it does in 720p60 on other Panasonic cameras. The problem is, since this signal required to output 1080p60 is 3G SDI, that would require “more expensive” electronics and a lot of monitors/external recorders wouldn’t be able to handle the signal. Although, FSI is including 3G SDI in their $5k top of the line 10bit monitor. 1080p60 will be a reality one day, but as of now it’s reserved for a special few.

If the AF100’s capture rate is such an issue that a lot of people prefer recording out from the HD-SDI, how does the internal recording hold up in 1080p60? There’s a video on Vimeo called “Snow” that’s shot on the AF100 in 1080p60 and it looks phenomenal.
I’m still debating if I can just get away with shooting my feature straight to the SDHC cards and avoid the outrageous added cost of getting a HD-SDI recorder. Espcially since I do have a scene that I’ll need to use the 1080p60 slow mo for.

Quality will depend very much on the amount of motion – different directions in particular – and fine, hi-con detail.
