Squeeze Mode Issue
My place of employment utilizes a DVX-100A. We are currently beginning to move from shooting 4:3 to 16:9. My initial assumption was that shooting squeeze mode was the way to go–just throw a reformat effect on it in Avid (if necessary).
Squeeze mode seems to have some flaws–when shooting straight edges (for example text on a poster) the edges appear to have a shadow. It appears as though there is a “ripple” on the subject of the shot when panning or tilting or the subject moves. Overall, it makes the image look soft–especially when compared to the 4:3 mode.
The camera was recently ‘fixed’ by panasonic, but I am noticing the same problem.
Is an anamorphic conversion lens necessary to utilize squeeze mode properly? does the avid reformat not work appropriately with the panasonic camera?
If anyone has any insights it would be incredible as this problems has been ongoing for quite some time.

What is the Avid reformat? There shouldn’t be any reformatting necessary- it’s your basic 16:9 anamorphic footage you get with Squeeze mode.

We are currently still finishing in a 4×3 letterbox format–that is why I use the avid reformat. Ideally we would like to shoot true 16×9 for when we eventually start finishing to true 16×9.
I also notice the same problems without Avid’s involvement–when I watch the footage on a Sony Monitor in 16×9 mode, off a deck, it still has the same issues: ripples, shadows on edges, and an overall soft image.

Well that’s because you’re stretching a 4:3 image to fit a 16:9 display. Really no way around that. If you want it to look proper on a 16:9 display you need to shoot 16:9. If you want a 4:3 letterbox image to look correct you must shoot 4:3 letterbox.

That is NOT what I am doing. I am not stretching anything. I am shooting in 16×9 squeeze mode and watching it on a monitor in 16×9 mode.
I want to shoot a true 16×9 image and squeeze it into a 4×3 letterboxed frame–I have no problem doing this with my XL2. Are you saying the DVX 100 can not shoot 16×9 footage capable of being displayed as both true 16×9 and 4×3 letterbox?–because that is hard to believe.

Well I suspect it’s got something to do with your scaling settings in Avid- I’d ask on the Avid forum. It works fine for me but I’m in FCP.
