Hi. I need to shoot something next week and have someone lending me an AG-DVX 100. It is a lit studio piece and so the film effect of shooying 24P is probably irrelevant. Since I am going direct to DVD with the edited product do you think I could simply shoot in 30P, Edit in Premiere, and export
interlaced 29.97 for use in Encore?

Thanks. It’s been so long since I shot anything I’ll be lucky to remember to take off the lens cap.

Pretty much. Though it would be a shame to not shoot at 24p. That’s the whole excitement of this camera. You can still cut at 29.97 as standard DV if you want. It will just have nice film look.

I would shoot in 24P if it is interview type stuff. You might also consider shooting in the letter box mode. That simply inserts a couple of black bars at the top/bottom of your 4×3 image giving you a 16×9 look. Editing it 24p from the DVX is just like 29.97. I use it in a “legacy” version of Media 100 all the time.

Couple of things. Don’t shoot in “Advanced”(24pa)or in the Squeeze mode.

    My thoughts,

I’d offer different advice. The letterbox mode in my opinion is completely useless. You can easily add some black bars over your footage in post to get that faux widescreen effect. But obviously if you change you mind and you shot in letterbox you can never remove those black bars.

The squeeze mode is actually quite useful if you intend to deliver in 16:9 as a final version. It’s not as good as a native 16:9 camera or an optical adapter, but it’s the next best thing. Most important consideration is decide 4:3 or 16:9 before you start shooting. Deciding in post is a fast track way to a compromised image.

    Hi Noah,

I’m a bit lost here – can you explain how you can shoot at 24 fps and edit at 29.97, wouldn’t that speed everything up? Thanks.
