Shotgun Cell Phone Interference
I’m using a Sennheiser MKE 300 with my Panasonic DVX100a. I’m getting a lot of interference from other peoples’ cell phones and was wondering if it was because this mic uses a thin cable with a mini plug instead of a thicker cable with an XLR connector. I’m using a mini jack to XLR adapter to connect to the DVX100a. Has anyone else noticed this with the MKE 300? I’m thinking about getting a Rode NTG-2 that uses XLRs. Would that eliminate the cell phone interference problem?

If the cell phones are within 10-12 feet or sometimes even further, I notice the interference… only through the Sennheiser mic, not the built-in camera mics. The other day I was shooting in a conference room at a law office. Lots of people with cell phones and other devices were walking by the room and caused a great deal of interference. Normally I simply ask everyone to turn off their cell phones but in this environment this was not possible.

You’re clearly going to be better off with the shielding capacities of XLR cables. It sounds like your mic is not really designed for “professional” use, at least based on some “reviews” I’ve read prompted by your issue.
