  DVX100 p2 cards

  I was thinking of buying a dvx100 for a documentary I’m about to shoot. I just spoke to someone at a camera store who said something that confused me. He told me that I’d also have to buy p2 cards that cost about $1000 each for 8GB (roughly 8 minutes). I’ve read lots of reviews saying this is a great camera for someone shooting alone, but it seems that if you have to keep switching and logging cards it would be entirely unfeasible (both cost and time-wise). Is this true?

  Only the HVX200 shoots to P2. The DVX100 records to DV tapes.

  In addition to what Noah has said, yes, if you’re using the P2 Cards (in an HVX200, not the DVX100), it can be a “pain”, but you should really educate yourself on the P2 support tools that are available including a Hard Disk unit that transfers content from the P2 cards to it’s hard drive, and a Firestore unit that hooks directly to the HVX with its own 80gb Hard Drive.

  Additionally, the P2 cards do average only about a gig per minute in the HD setting, but they’ll give you about 15 minutes in the standard def mode.

  Do you homework…there’s a BUNCH to learn about P2.

  If you return to the forum page and drop down one listing to the P2 Cameras you can research a lot more about this camera. There are great people there that will help you. No offense meant at all here but you have a lot more reading and research to do on this camera. It is a great camera but does not neet everyone’s needs

  1. Someone has the DVX100 and the HVX200 mixed up. The DVX100 shoots standard def to tape only. The HVX shoots SD to tape and an HD format to slide, solid state memory cards. If you are going off into the jungle for a few months, you’ll need a tape based camera. If you have access to civilization, the P2 might be a possibility.

  2. If the sales person is confused, find a new vendor.
