  • Using the DVX in a “live” Situation

I was tasked to cover a press conference yesterday and brought along my DVX-100a and a laptop PC w/Avid Express Pro HD.

I was hoping to tape the presentation, while at the same time, ingesting the output of the DVX via the firewire connection into the Avid PC, since I had a quick turnaround to get the material ready for a Satellite feed.

Well, it didn’t quite work like that. I made my feed time, but I wasn’t able to both Tape and Capture. My Avid kept giving me a No Input Present message when the DVX was actually recording.

So, my question to all (especially Noah!)is: Can the DVX100a both record to tape AND provide a signal via Firewire simultaneously?

    Thanks for your consideration,

    Tim Scarpino

Yes- the trouble is with your Avid. On FCP when you go live you have to tell FCP that it’s capturing from a non-controllable device. Then it will not expect tape timecode. Possibly Avid has a similar setting in its log and capture window.

    Thanks Noah.

AEP does have a setting to capture from a Non-controllable device, but to activate it, you need to open the Capture tool.

I’m gonna check into this again, but it sounds like the DVX should be able to record to tape AND output via the firewire connector simultaneously. If NOT, please let me know I’m wrong.

    Thanks Noah,

As far as the DVX is concerned- absolutely.

    Tim,

    Maybe consider this.

Save yourself the time of a ton of capturing and do a line cut live. This will involve a switcher, running matched code to all the camera’s and the record deck(s), but in this scenario you could load larger DV or Betacam tapes and be covered for 90 to 120 minutes of recording time.

You can then go in and patch the line cut where you have errors from the tapes recorded in camera. They you only have to load shots from the sources and time you need to.

Sometimes a little extra on the front end saves you a ton of aggrivation on the back end. THink of the captue and edit time you will save. It is well worth considering as an alternative to all of the capturing, storage and multicam Pain in the behind.

You can run the composite outputs to a four source switcher and record to camera tapes. This way you will have a line cut and ISO’s and the cameramen won’t be guessing either.

    Peace and Love 🙂
