I’ve been using a Canon GL2 for all my shoots and want to keep that for B roll and upgrade to the Panasonic DVX100a or 100b. Hope you don’t mind a few DVX newbie questions here, then.

First–how steep is the learning curve from a GL2 to the DVX cameras?

Second will the quality be so different on footage shot from the GL2 to the DVX100a or b that it will look too strange to edit the two together?

Third–I read the thread about the interval timer–which seems like a nice feature–any other thoughts on getting an a vs. b besides cost?

    Last–anyone know a good dealer that still stocks new DVX100A’s (B and H doesn’t)?

thanks a lot for any help-

depends- if you shoot 60i with the DVX you could probably get them looking pretty close. If you shot 24p, and if you’re like me you’ll fall in love with the look very quickly- the GL2 will not be worthwhile any more to cut in IMHO. Lots more info here:

Thanks a lot Noah. I’m sure I will fall in love with the look too. Damn it. Not sure what to do with my GL2…

Thanks for the link–I just briefly scanned it and it will be very useful, but I think I need to understand the whole 24p/30p/60i/progressive etc thing at an even more basic level to really understand the whole variety of choices offered. Can you suggest any other links?

Also–can the 24p footage and other choices be captured and edited in PPro 1.5? Altered in AE 6.5? Other compatibility issues to take into consideration (e.g. graphics card, DVD authoring or other software compatibility, etc)?

Lastly, what do you think about the differences between DVX100a and DVX100b?
    thanks again for the help-

How do I capture VHS footage inline to the camera? I can get the image on the monitor, but I can’t record it. I ran RCA lines to the VHS and camera. It will show the picture on the monitor in the VCP mode, but how do I get it to record that image that is being assed thru the camera?
