DVX100BE Telephoto Lens
Hi there
I’m from Australia and am about to place an order to purchase a panasonic dvx100BE with the intent of learning cinematography techniques to create noir and action style film.
From the research on various forums/websites i’ve decided against buying the panasonic anamorphic lens or wide angle lens, and will just stick to the camera’s squeeze mode in 25p. I’m interested in the Century Optics 1.6x tele-converter lens but have read reports that you need to be approx 9 feet from your subject to correctly focus?
Can anybody recommend a telephoto lens or equivelant for allowing me to get good headshots of subjects from a reasonably close distance (3 feet or so?)
I’ve got tripod etc under control but am really newbie when it comes to lenses/filters. If people could recommend good combinations that they’ve found work for them i’d really appreciate it and will research these further to find what sounds best for me.

At 3 feet the camera’s built-in lens would provide a more than adequate telephoto effect.

Yes, you certainly won’t need a telephoto lens at that distance.
However, have you tired this trick? Stand further away from your subject than you would normally, and use the telephoto to get the closeness you want: also try to get your subject, if possible, to be aways away from the background, as well. When you zoom in on the subject, focus on just them, leaving the foreground and background out of focus, like a film camera would capture it. You can see Steven Soderburgh doing this alot, especially now that he uses Digital.

I am 4 days away from buying a DVX100AE as I was told by Panasonic and Rexel that there is no DVX100BE model in Australia. Could we compare notes and pricing?!!!

I belive the price of the two cameras is the same as the 100B is replacing the 100A. My understanding is that the internal workings of the two cameras are the same (ie gamma, color matrix, etc.) however, several “creature comforts” have been improved or added.
I have been very happy with the results I get from the 100A and have no problem recommending one, but if you can wait, get the 100B! The 100B has a veiw finder that sees the whole image from the CCD as opposed to an overscanned image and that could save you from unwanted c-stands, light stands, boom mics in your shots. Also a higher resolution LCD screen and view finder will make focusing better. If you plan on shooting 16:9 squeeze, the view find will show you a 16:9 image as opposed to a squeezed image. This is very important for composition. There are numerous improvements to the already great camera and you can learn more on the Panasonic website.
