  Random timecode

  I know there are dozens of posts about timecode issues, but after searching, I still have a question.

  I have about 12 of 60 tapes that were shot (all on DVX100A cameras with MQ tapes) that do not come up with a regular timecode in playback… in fact, after being fully rewound, they are starting with a timecode that’s totally random (for example 08:39:24;00). They rewind and fastforward using that code. The other tapes (from the same cameras) are fine. How big of a deal is this? FCP can still read the tapes for capture, but I don’t want to mess up the project down the road. In reading posts, I haven’t quite come across this problem… any ideas on how this happened? Also, is there a way to reset timecode, or is it a firewire transfer to create a new tape with new timecode (and if so, how do you do this)?

  Lots of questions; I’d really appreciate it if someone could help me out with this…

  You cannot reset timecode on an already recorded tape but a Firewire transfer will create a tape with fresh TC. It’s not going to be an issue with editing if you are cutting in DV because once you have it in the computer you won’t ever go back to the source tapes anyway.
