I stupidly shot 480i video for a friend but forgot to select the squeeze mode and now I have 4:3 aspect ratio. She wanted 16:9. Is there some way I can convert the footage I shot into decent looking 16:9 video?

I changed it to 16:9 in FCP during an export but it looks all stretched out.

You have to do a center crop of the image, so you are zooming in 133%. There will be a quality hit. For best quality I would do this in Compressor.

    Frames Control: On
    Resize Filter: Best

    Geometry:
Source Inset Crop to: 16×9 1.78:1
    Dimensions: 720×480, NTSC (16:9)

And you will get what you want.
