P2 Reader PCIe adapter for MacBook Pro
Posted by Robert Gilkes on August 31, 2010 at 2:42 pmHi,
I have a Panasonic AJ-PCD35P P2 Card Reader, but unfortunately it uses a PCIe interface and I want to also connect it to my MBP. Is there any adapter I can buy to hook it up to my MBP?
Please note I have the latest model 15in MBP that does not have an Express 34 Slot.
Thanks for all your help!!

August 31, 2010 at 6:11 pmMan…you have a MBP without Express34? Seriously crippled machine. You can’t use this then…

From my research, there isn’t an option to go from PCIe to Firewire or USB. Just isn’t done. And any adapter might run you more than $350…so why not just get the USB P2 single card reader that Panasonic makes?

August 31, 2010 at 6:15 pmI’m not a huge fan of the size of the 17in MBP. The single card reader is nice, but it’s just that…a single card reader. I may just put this one on eBay. I’m pretty sure Panasonic released the same reader I have with a USB2.0/FW800 interface sometime after.

August 31, 2010 at 6:19 pmI wouldn’t get rid of this. USB is SERIOUSLY SLOW compared to PCIe direct. You will never get the same speeds you get from that device.
Look for a used Powerbook on eBAY…one with a built in slot. I keep one just for this purpose.

but it is slower transfer.
Any the lack of Express34 is a bad thing for the video world with the 15″
Who cares about a slot that replaces an $20 adapter.

August 31, 2010 at 6:58 pmYea, that’s exactly what I was referring to.
I wish the Express slot would have stayed. I have so many SD card readers that came with cameras, cards, etc. I don’t know what to do with them anymore.

August 31, 2010 at 8:45 pmI just was given a new 15″ too. The loss of the FW 400 slot, Expresscard 34 slot and the glossy screen relegate this laptop to an e-mail, web browsing machine, it is not equipped to do serious video production anymore. Wish I would have had the choice for a 17″ model, although I too don’t like lugging the bigger 17″ around. It wouldn’t fit into my CineBags CB-25.
FWIW, I bought the AJ-PCD2 and it is surprisingly fast, I have been pretty happy with it so far. It is not as fast as PCI-E, but it is faster than I thought it would be.

September 2, 2010 at 5:11 pmI needed to do the exact same thing.
I experimented with a Matrox MXO2 PCI adapter and it works great.

September 2, 2010 at 5:34 pmThanks Art, but the problem (as stated in the original post) is my 15in MBP doesn’t have the Express35 Slot.

September 3, 2010 at 7:11 amUnfortunately, you’re out of luck Robert, given that particular Mac. If you need 5 slots, then the PCD20 is the only option….but it’s so damn expensive for a USB2/FireWire 800 card reader (and the FW800 speed is just as slow as USB2 on the PCD20).
If you can make due with copying one card at a time, then then PCD2 is a better value.
