24pN for SD DVD
Hi folks,
I understand that a main advantage to filming in 24p is that you get a better ‘film look’ vs. a video look. Will final output will be DVD (29.97) so will I loose my 24p film look by going to DVD in the end? And am I better off filming in 30p the whole way through?
Also, are there any other advantages or disadvantages in shooting in 24p vs 30p?

I shoot and edit everything in 24p. It looks great on the web and on DVD. When you encode for DVD, pulldown is added to get to 29.97.

I agree with Dave. We do this all the time – shoot 23.976 HD and make SD DVDs. The encoder sets pulldown flags for DVD players. Another advantage of this approach is with only 24 frames per second more data rate can be dedicated to each video frame resulting in better looking DVDs.

Just to clarify Jason’s post. Pulldown is added by the player not it is not in the encode, only flags to add the pulldown is in the encode. Other than the look/feel of 24p vs 60i, you get more bang for the buck on your encoding rate, less frames = more bitrate for each remain frame. FWIW
