HD Audio from HPX300
We’ve recently acquired a HPX300 and while shooting 720p footage with a wireless mic, the mic’s XLR output was routed to Channel 1 of the camera. Our editor, using FCP 7.01, has Logged and Transferred the footage and during the process, only “clicked on” the Channel 1 audio (even though there are four available channels.) The result was thin, really low audio when placed in the FCP timeline. So she went back to the same clip and saw that Channel 1 and Channel 3 were playing the same audio with Channel 3 being even more robust in the meter than Channel 1. She re-transferred the same clip (different name) and replaced the original Channel 1-only audio clip in the timeline. It sounds much better.
So the question is: Why? Even though we thought we assigned the wireless mic to the Channel 1 input, it recorded on both Channel 1 and 3– with Channel 3 seemingly containing the more robust audio. If you were to transfer the same clip with just Channel 3 audio, it doesn’t sound as robust– we find we have to capture (and use) both Ch. 1 and Ch. 3 to get “all” the audio. We’ve shot with the same camera in DVCPro50 and this did not occur– Channel 1 was the mic and Channel 2 was the nat sound mic. There was nothing on Ch. 3 and 4 when shooting in DVCPro 50. Is the seemingly two channel recording of a one channel input the nature of working with HD? Thanks so much for the help!

Sorry for the stupidity.
We discovered the camera operator could have set the Channel 3 and 4 switches to W/L and not recorded any audio on those channels. The reason why Channel 3 sounded more robust is because his Channel 3 was set to Auto.
