  • Can’t see P2 files in FCP

    Hello,

We have shot on HVX 200A (720/24p)for a whole week with 4 different P2 cards, and every time we uploaded them to the macbook pro (with the DuelAdapter) most of the clips came up in the FCP Log and Transfer but NOT all. Some clips were missing. We noticed it because there was a gap in the TC – At least 3 or 4 clips were missing from each P2 and they were all in different lengths (from 1min to 12min). We could see these clips in the camera but not on Final Cut.
We downloaded the P2CMS software and loaded these P2 folders into the software and we could see the missing clips but once we exported them from the P2CMS and tried to upload the new exported folders, Final Cut still wouldn’t recognize them.

We are not sure how to load these clips to the Final Cut. We also have no idea why it’s not recognizing these clips.

We already shot for many weeks on this camera with the same P2 cards and it never happened before.

We would really appreciate any advice as the footage on these clips is
    crucial to our project.

Lemme guess…do some of these clips say SPANNED? If so, then the SPANNED clip contains the other clips. This happens because the P2 cards are formatted FAT32 and that has a 4GB limit, so if you record longer than fit in 4GB, it breaks the shot up into multiple clips. So you will have 0001GHS, 0002TYV, 0003TUE and so on, but in Log and Transfer it will only show 0001GHS….because 0002 and 0003 are included in it.

Look at the clips…see if the whole shot is there.

Actually none of these clips are spanned clips. Also these are single clips which were recorded in the middle of the P2 and not at the end like in the the case of Spanned clips.
    Any other thoughts?
    Would really appreciate it.
    thanks 🙂

Spanned clips can happen internally as well (if a clip is over 4GBs). It doesn’t necessarily have to be at the end of a full card. My guess is that your footage is there. Sort your bin by media start and check the tc.

I’m going to agree with Shane and Jeremy. Especially since you say some of the clips were up to 12 minutes long. By virtue of the 4GB limit of FAT32 they would have to be spanned internally on each card. It does seem a little weird that it’s not obvious where they are though. Could some of the clips been deleted in camera?

Some of the clips are actually very short and were less than 4GB… one was 800MB and other ones were smaller even.
Even if I export those missing clips from the P2CMS and try to import
them one by one into the Log and Transfer window, they won’t open up.
    I don’t think it’s a spanned clip issue.

When you install P2CMS you also get a quicktime component that allows you to open audio and video MXF files in quicktime… which also means you can drag those MXF files into FCP. I’d look at the file name for the clips you can see in P2CMS (but not FCP) and try dragging them right into a bin. You’ll have to manually drag and re-sync any audio tracks, but it may get you going.

I too can not input the files from the P2 device. I have tried to drag and drop the MXF files, that is not working either. Please help.
