P2 Contents Manager Software
Posted by Matt Burrows on May 16, 2009 at 10:16 pmAnyone know where I can get my hands or eyeballs on a P2 CMS Manual that’s better than the awful one provided in the program help??? The info in the help menu STINKS ON ICE!!! I really have know idea what I can do with the software becuase I can’t find decent documentation.
Every time I try to copy my P2 content I get the “copy failed”. However, I wouldn’t know what that means because the help doesn’t seem to explain it.
Thanks

May 17, 2009 at 12:41 amLogin to PASS and see if there’s a manual there. https://eww.pass.panasonic.co.jp/p2ui/Login.do
If you can’t find the info there, you can purchase Shotput P2 which is a great program that automates off-loading P2 cards. https://www.imagineproducts.com/ShotPut_P2_Edition.html
You can also manually copy the data from the card to a hard drive. Make a folder on your drive and name it for your project, for instance Project_01. You’ll make a new folder for each P2 card you shot. Then drag the Contents folder AND the lastclip file into Project_01. Similarly, drag the contents and lastclip from the 2nd P2 into Project_02 and so on for all your cards. Then use your NLE system to Log & Transfer (if you use FCP) the clips from each project folder. Other NLEs have similar processes.

May 17, 2009 at 2:17 amHey John,
Thanks very much for the quick response! I’ll give those links a try. However, before I go to that trouble… I’m already very familiar with the process you described. We do it on a regular basis on both FCP systems and Avid Media Composers. Soooo, I’m guessing that what your saying is that the Panasonic P2 CMS may not really be necessary for someone who is having no trouble importing P2 footage into there NLEs without it. Is that the case? Are there any advantages or features specific to the P2 Content Management Software? I wouldn’t know because Panasonic’s documentation; both the product description and the help files STIIIIINK! I just stumbled across it while exploring their P2 downloads page and it looked interesting.
Thanks again for you help!
Sincerely,
Matt Burrows -

May 17, 2009 at 3:27 amFinder copies have no verify function.
P2CMS: load up the card in the window, select all then hit command-e. Choose a destination and make a new folder there (command-shift-n), choose copy, choose do verify. Hit okay.
That way you will have a verified copy.
I also recommend shotput pro.

May 17, 2009 at 2:48 pmWhile I’ve downloaded P2CMS, I’ve never used it. P2 Genie was the first transfer software we used. Now it’s Shotput P2. It’s great advantage is it does a byte-by-byte verification of the transferred media. And, you can transfer the data to up to 3 drives simultaneously. We transfer all P2 data to a two-drive RAID1 array and a second separate drive. After a shoot, both drives are hand-carried by different people.

May 17, 2009 at 3:47 pmMultiple drives at the same time? I’m sold! That’ll save me a lot of time backing up data. As it stands now I have to:
1) pull the contents folder and last clip file over to the drive I’m going to import from
2) copy those same files over to another drive so that I have a redundant backup for safety.
It may take just as long for the transfer but it sounds like I wouldn’t have to wait around waiting for step 1 to complete.
Thank you sir! Your info has been a big help! Hope I can repay the favor one day. Or, at least pay it forward.
Matt
