Importing Video directly from MXF
Hello, I’m editing a project shot on the HVX200 in 720p24. The problem is that some audio files did not transfer from one P2 card. I have triple checked that all other files are intact; only the audio files missing. FCP’s Log and Transfer tool shows the thumbnails for all 22 clips, as you might expect, but I cannot play or import them. Luckily, for these clips in particular I would be able to use only the video (as if they are MOS), so if there is any way to import, transcode, or otherwise extract the video from the MXF files, it would make my life a whole lot easier. I have tried the Raylight Demo, VLC and MPEG Streamclip, all to no avail. Also I have verified the contents of the MXF files using ‘CalibratedMXFQStat’.
My next step is to see if a colleague can open the MXF files in Premiere Pro, then export the media. However, that may be a few days, and I’m hoping to find a more simple workaround.

What was the problem with Raylight for Mac? It should do what you need it to.

You could just open in QT Pro and export if necessary.

I thought it would work, but it just gave me a black picture. The slate on frame 2 is there, but just black after that. I was using the Demo of course, so it was only 10 sec, but still I think it should work.

You can open MXFs in QT? Do you need any particular component(s)? Here are mine, in case that is of any use (incompatibilities for example). Thanks for your suggestions.

within the P2 folder structure just navigate to the video folder, then right click on an mxf. Open with…
and select Quicktime. -

I have found a very ugly workaround though, for anyone interested. I have edited the XML files in the CLIP directory, removing all text between the Audio tags. Now I can see the clips in FCP’s Log and Transfer tool, and am able to import them!!! Like I said, ugly workaround, but I’ll take it. Problem solved. Thanks!

Hi,
Glad you’re using our freeware application Calibrated MXF QuickStat. You can also download a demo (not freeware) of our plug in Calibrated{Q} MXF Import here:

this will allow direct importing of MXF files into FCP with timecode, and married video w/ audio. Another company called MXF4MAC also makes a MXF importer for FCP. If you just need P2 MXF video clips without the need for timecode or marrying audio with video clips then download and install Panasonic’s free P2CMS software as it includes a P2 MXF Importer as well but it does not support timecode.

Like Greg said above, installing P2CMS will give you a quicktime MXF plug-in… then you should be able to import the video MXF files directly into FCP. You lose timecode, it ignores all metadata, and any audio clips would have to be imported and synced manually, but for video only it should work just fine.

Another workaround I have used in the passed is to download the demo of Edius Broadcast by Canopus and import the clips into that. Then you can export Quicktimes form there if necessary.Whatever you end up doing, just make sure you have actually brought in the clips original timecode, because you don’t want to find out at the end of the edit that you haven’t and have to start from scratch potentially.
