Hi,

I want to use my HVX 200 as a recorder/link between FCP and external monitor (SD), but somehow I don’t seem to get the signal into the camera even though External frames are ON in playback menu. Does anyone know, how to get the signal into the camera and get the camera to recognise it?

Sorry, but you can’t. You need a full sized firewire connection for this, and the HVX-200 has a smaller 4-pin connector. The newer HPX-170 allows for this, but not the 200s. Sorry.

Thanks Shane. Thats a bit of a shame. I’m working from a G4. Have you got any ideas for another sheap-ish solution to get the external monitor working?

Cheapest option you have is the Matrox MXO.

What I have is a normal LCD tv with A/V, HDMI, Scart and Y/Pb/Pr in. Would that work with a Matrox MXO? For now I only need SD monitoring.

Anne,
if you are just doing DV, you could just get a cheap consumer DV camera with firewire and an analog output. Connect the 6 pin firewire from your computer to the 4 pin firewire at the camera and the analog out to the A/V in at your TV and you should be in business. Consumer DV cameras go for very little money these days. That’s if money is an issue. If not, then an external capture device like the Aja I/O or the Matrox will give you a lot more functionality and professional features.

That will work with the MXO. It has SDI, Component, composite, s-video and DVI outs…and plays out a lot of footage. But you said you shot with the HVX…aren’t you shooting HD?

Here’s how I do it:

Hooking Up the Panasonic HVX200 (P2) Camera to an NTSC Monitor via Final Cut Pro.

• On back of camera use switch above Media to go from P2 to Tape
• Hook camera to computer via Firewire
• Turn camera on
• Use button on back to switch from Camera to MCR VCR
• Go from video out on camera to video in on monitor (RCA-RCA)
On Final Cut Pro:
• View==>Refresh A/V Devices
• View==>Video Playback==>Apple Firewire DVCPRO NTSC (720X480)
• View==>External Video==>All Frames
