I am starting to work with DVCPRO HD shot at 720Pn from the HVX 200. I am planning to ingest around 10 minutes of footage every week.

1.) As part of an ideal workflow, do you backup the contents folder and lastclip.txt files copied to the Mac, in addition to having the footage that is ingested into FCP? Or would making a copy of the footage already ingested into FCP be sufficient?

2.) What exactly is FCP doing during the process while it is ingesting the footage? Is it applying compression? Are there any settings that I can alter to affect the ingested quality?

    Thanks!

Yes it’s a great idea to backup everything from the cards- including lastclip.txt and all folders. That leaves your cards wide open.

The Log and Transfer process strips away the MXF header and replaces it with .MOV, the actual video and audio data contained within remains unchanged.

Archive the P2 strucutre, they are your digital masters.

No further compression. Don’t want to log and transfer? Check this:

If you are looking for a smooth workflow solution you may want to check out Raylight. DVfilm Raylight for Mac will take Log and transfer out of the process. Try the free demo of DVfilm Raylight for Mac. See if you like it.

    Hope this is helpful,
