  • Yesterday’s LASTCLIP.TXT creation date– 5 years ago?!

Just shot 3 8GB cards with the HVX200, transferred their data to external FW drive through card slot on PBG4, all as usual for a project this year for which we’ve done this about a hundred times without hitches.

After transfer I noticed the time of day of the LASTCLIP.TXT file was correct, but the date on each for each card was Dec. 31 2003. I loaded the cards back in and sure enough, the date is 12/31/03.

I checked the HVX200 clock and the PBG4’s clock and both are set correctly for current time and date. I want my scene file info to be correct for this shot footage, and for tomorrow and next week’s shooting… what could be the problem?

First of all, I realize tonight as I start to transfer today’s cards, the creation year 03 refers not to 2003 but to 1903. Secondly, as to why I would need the original file creation date to be accurate, well, uhm, because, y’know, oughtn’t it?

It feels a bit odd, even misleading, to archive these files for future generations, and them getting the timeline of digital filmmaking all wrong. They’ll have enough of an archaeological mystery on their hands about why interlacing persisted for nearly a century.

So maybe it’s always been this way and I never noticed before. The Date Modified column is accurate for today’s date, that must be what I always looked at until last night.

The actual creation date of the acutal MXF file gets tagged in the XML file (it’s all those files in the ‘CLIP’ folder). So, as long as your camera has the right date set, those files will be tagged correctly. To learn more about how to keep your p2 metadata in tact, watch this:

Thanks! MXF4Mac may be a great addition to the toolset, I will investigate further.
