P2 Card reader
All
I have a PowerPC G4 laptop that has a PCI card slot
Can I Copy P2 footage using this slot.

Yup. This is the main reason I still have my Powerbook G4 and haven’t upgraded to a macbook pro. That and the computer still works and does everything else I need. But the added ability to just slap in a P2 card and offload, wham bam thank you ma’am, is a HUGE plus.
Hold on to that computer…

Thank you! As a backup what do you think about the Dual Systems reader or is there a solution that is 100-200 range?
Bringing in 1 to 2 hour tops and don’t see the need for the big p2 store units

Backup? You misunderstand what the Duel Systems ADAPTER is. It allows people to use their MacBook Pro with the smaller Express34 slot. It is just an adapter…PCMCIA to Express34. You cannot use this on the Powerbook.

Nor do you need them. Connect a large hard drive to your Powerbook via firewire and offload to them. You can have 1TB of storage or more attached. No need for the P2 Store…that is a stand alone device for offloading. And is long in the tooth. P2 Gear is the new option, and you can attach a drive to that for direct offloading. But it is pricy. Use what you have.

This question is mostly directed to Shane…:
Do you use any software to get the P2 card to appear at the desktop as a drive, when you put the P2 card directly into your Powerbook G4…?
I have just tried to put one of my P2 cards (32Gb) into my friend’s Powerbook G4, but nothing happend…
The P2 card did not show as a drive, as it does when I use my HPX500 as “Cardreader”Any suggestions….?

Just the P2 card drivers. You need those to get the card to appear no matter what you use to connect to a computer to get the cards to appear.
Download the P2 card drivers and it should work.

I have a MBP but I’m using my pcie slot with an eSATA card to power my external LaCie HD. So I’m up-the-creek?See my post about about the new cameras I’m thinking of getting. So I guess I’d have to use the FW400/800 for my external HD to get either the P2 or SD/SDHC into the computer?
Problem I was having is that my external HD in the FW800 and my Canopus ADVC100 in the FW400 things didn’t work too well! My external monitor wa freezing up. Hense the eSATA card.

For straight transfer of video data, I don’t see where USB 2.0 would be a problem. That would allow you to keep your current configuration.
The idea of the laptop, being portable, and cards is that you could bring the MBP along on a shoot and download a card or cards, while you continue to shoot on another.
Or in your case, maybe you’re on the train ride back and you can sit down with your laptop and cards and download your footage from the day. This is very handy as you don’t have to bring out your camera and hook it up or your externals or any thing else. Either way/camera will require you to have an adapter though.
I think you need to consider your laptop as more of a laptop and not a desktop. Configuration changes to do downloads and then configuration changes for editing, one process/purpose at a time.
The next thing to consider is file format and codecs. For that, you’d better put in a lot of homework and really decide which you will be happier dealing with.
