P2 flagging incorrect frame rate?
We got clips from an HDX 500 and they come in flagged as 1080p30, however the camera guys swears they were shot 1080i 24p. They have the three progressive frames followed by two interlaced frames, just like the old 24 fps film transferred to Beta used to look like, but this stuff is very juddery.
What gives? How can the clips be flagged incorrectly?
Or are they?
We are editing on a quad core mac, leopard, 6.0.3 FCP kona 3 system in a 720 p 24p 59.94 sequence.

If they shot 1080i 24PA, then you can remove the redundant frames when you import. Just make sure the REMOVE PULLDOWN is checked in the Long and Transfer prefs (in the Sprocket pulldown menu).

Thanks. That wasn’t it. We took the clips and dragged them into a 1080p30 DVCPro HD sequence that matched the clips, then dragged the Nattress Remove Pulldown onto them, found the right cadence and rendered them and they played perfect.

This seems to be a bug with DVCPro HD 24p (not 24pA) material. Please send feedback to Apple to get it fixed. You can’t take these files to Cinema Tools (for instance) to remove the pulldown. You can also try Compressor to remove the pulldown from the raw clips as well. Nice and automatic and leaves you with shots that don’t have to be rendered.

When you say it’s a bug, do you mean FCP is interpreting the 24p footage and flagging it as 30p? That would make sense. It sure looked pretty bad during the two field frames. Again, applying the Remove Pulldown filter with Nattress got us on the right track.

FCP should be calling this footage 1080i30, instead it calles it 30p which is incorrect. It’s not processing or doing anything to the footage, it is just identifying it improperly which causes problems.

That’s just pulldown. Same stuff you see with movies that play on tv in SD.
If you apply the remove pulldown filter, don’t you have to render every single clip now?

Ok…Update. When we applied the Remove Pulldown the audio got way out of sync. So we backtracked and investigated changing our sequence settings and playback settings and control panel settings.
We changed the codec of the sequence setting to 1080i DVCProHD and then changed the Control Panel to 1080i 29.97 and then we changed the playback to 1080i 29.97, and voila! With the plugin off and the clip playing alone it played back perfectly.
So it was a matter of ignoring how the clip was flagged (as someone suggested here) and playing with sequence/playback and control panel settings until we hit the right combo.
Absolutely nutty.
And we’ll probably never see this one again!

Ok Rich. Can you please tell me what you are trying to do? Do you need the video to be 29.97 or 23.98? If it’s 29.97, then just edit it as it is, if it’s 23.98, then you need to remove the pulldown.

Basically I need the footage to play back in sync and without the horrible field judder we were seeing. It was clearly recorded 1080i 24p on an HDX-500 but FCP flagged the clips on import as 1080p 30 and they played back horribly. Something was clearly wrong. they were obviously running at 24p with a pulldown, but the fields were very screwed up. We simply wanted to get them onto a DVCPro HD tape so we could then digitize them back into a DVCPro HD 720p project. But we could not get them to play correctly.
Only after we made a custom sequence at 1080i 29.97, NOT 30p and matching our playback and control panel settings did we get a locked in playback and we are now making a timecode matched tape.
This will be a source for our 720p project and we’ll let the Kona do the conversion on the way back in.
We are also making the tape for the producer, and we usually output all our P2 and XDCAM footage to tape with matching timecode as well as backing up the files.

Got ya. Then yes as mentioned earleier, you need to set your project up for regular ole 1080i DVCPro HD.
