P2 Work Flow and back-up
I’ve been tasked with shooting some EPKs. The current workflow is terrible. I just started dealing with P2. How would U suggest I archive, organize and backup the data after importing the cards. I don’t want to depend on just one drive. Thanks in advance.

We use a mirrored RAID in the field so every time a card is saved to it, there’s an instant backup. Then every evening, we copy that drive to one more drive so the data is on three separate drives. When we travel, the drives are carried by different people and if we fly, they never go in baggage, always as carry-on.
After we edit, the third drive becomes the archive of the project and goes on the shelf. Adjust the size of your drives to the size of your typical project.

We use hard drives also. If you don’t trust one hard drive, trust two. They are cheaper than tape.

Ditto RAID 1 for field backups. The data moves to a RAID 3 for editing, and the RAID 1 drives go to the shelf when full to serve as “camera masters” archive. I would prefer to use LTO3 for long-term archive, but don’t have a drive yet. Takes 16 minutes to copy 16GB card. If you edit on FCP & aren’t using Raylight, STOP! and buy it.

Yup Raid 1 mirror is very easy to manage in the field though of course it’s slow so you want to make sure you have someone managing it who knows what they’re doing. As for what happens for archive- yup it’s either stack of hard drives or something more robust when you’re getting serious. Such as this little guy(not cheap but quite useful):

What’s faster Noah? I get 1GB/min to a RAID1. Was hoping this would be about as fast as it gets.
(Caveat – this test was yesterday using data from MBPro via FW800 out to RAID. DuelAdapter due in today, so don’t know if that’ll slow down the transfer.)

The transfer to FW800 is good, though ESATA through the ExpressCard slot is even nicer. I was referring more to the USB connection through the camera or the P2 drive or Store.

I get almost 2GB/minute going to my laptop’s internal hard disk. 1GB/minute is pretty slow for modern hardware unless you’re doing a verified file copy.

Call me paranoid…. verified copy to a RAID 1.
