Recommendations for a cheaper/smaller camera to compliment HVX 200
I do realize the irony in this post…Usually the HVX IS the small camera that compliments the bigger camera, but in my case HVXs will be the main aquisition tool and I’m curious if there are any other smaller/cheaper cameras out there that can be used for wall mounting, car mounting, etc., that can fit nicely into a P2 workflow but not be such a big deal if they get trashed. (This is for a sports related reality show by the way)
Of course, the HVX isn’t all that expensive, but I figured I would at least explore some options.

Nothing cheaper that would produce similar footage- assuming you mean dvcprohd 720 & 1080.

It’s a toughy, no sense going low end hdv because they are too close in cost to not just get a second hvx200. I’ve been toying with the idea of getting one of these just to keep in my bag for back up. They are $1600.00 street price.
Panasonic HDC-SD1 AVCHD
It’s more of a consumer camera with the gop style avc codec but the price is right, it’s small and they are supposed to produce a decent image too. uses 3 – 1/4″ ccd’s and sd memory cards. I think people are getting away with less these days as in there seems to be a lot of people resurecting footage from dvd’s and re-editing it into programs so you should be able to sneak a clip of this in here or there.
I will add that I have never touched one of these cams or seen footage from one 1st hand so a person would need to feel it out themselves.

That’s a very cute camera- I’ve played with one. Surprisingly nice picture given the amount of compression. But aesthetically its footage doesn’t look at all like an HVX200, except slightly in the HVX’s 1080/60i mode.

Thanks for the input gentlemen. For my application we’re going to be shooting 24P and using P2 so even if we save a little money with HDV it probably wouldn’t make up for the hassle of the different frame rate and the tape based workflow. I guess we need to tell the client to pony up the cash for more 200s!
