  • Will This Archive System Work?

Posted by Phil Summers on October 5, 2007 at 8:53 pm

    Hi Guys
Am embarking on a project with HVX200 shooting 720pN and wanted someone in the ‘know’ to check out my system. Only have the camera, macbook pro and FW/USB drive, I think this is ok and it seems to work (in theory) but dont want to have missed anything obvious…

So, am going to record onto the cards (obviously) then connect the camera via FW to macbook pro. I then plan to import with P2 import in FCP – FCP will then make a QT duplicate and save it in the capture scratch file. As an archive I then plan to drag the dmx files from the drive icon on the desktop to the external FW/USB drive. This will keep the all of the metadata safe until i return from location and get to the online edit.

Would this work out? Any feedback much appreciated

Sure but I’d get P2 CMS from Panasonic to make verified copies- it’s free. Also the files are MXF. DMX is a rapper/actor and a lighting control interface.

    P2 CMS Mac:

    Hi Noah

Thanks for your help and for picking me up on the file name – lucky I didnt put DMC! Although it was a great track with aerosmith!

Anyway can you explain “to make verified copies” please? Will the copied files from camera to laptop be defunct in some way?

    Thanks again

Verified just means there is a checking process, “The files are good” like Toast does when you burn a disc. Just a safety feature, but a very important one.

Also you may want to look into the dual systems adapter
    https://www.duel-systemsadapters.com/?productid=DP-0001

Will speed up the process of transferring or copying especially if you use FW800 drives.

Also a lot of people are using mirrored FW drive enclosures so there is a back up to the back up.

Also order I do this is – copy raw files to the hard drive – then do the Log and Transfer with these copied files. That way the camera/card/firestore is not tied up twice.

We’ve found(we go over this on my training disc) that once in a blue moon copies may not complete with the OS finder. Very rare but the only way to guarantee 100% verified(i.e. completed successful) copy operations is via P2 CMS or P2 Log. Just a slight additional layer of protection. Many HVX200 users transfer footage via the finder alone day after day and never have this issue.
