P2 Archiving
Hi, I am having P2 archive issues.
We are using Avid Media Composer systems and have just gotten HD cameras that use up to 5 P2 cards at a time. (We bought the brand new 16 gig cards straight from Japan!)
They work fine straight into the machine but we would like to archive the footage for future (and other project) use.
Some of the archive stuff I’ve read on the internet talk about archiving each 4 gig card to a 4.7 gig DVD but due to the card size we are going to have to use blu-ray to archive ours.
So this is what I try:
* I open the DVD burning software
* I copy the data on the card (or fire store hard drive) to the DVD burning software.
* I burn the DVD.(We would like to do something like this for EVERYthing we shoot because we are forever delving into the library for a past shot of this or that…)
Then I would like to open the Avid and have it recognize the data on the DVD. (or better, copy from the DVD to the media drive on the computer and have it recognize from there) And it doesn’t! It keeps asking for a P2 source. I feel like I’ve left out a step and for some reason I can’t see it.
If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

Not sure as I’m not an Avid user but I’d imagine it requires the file structure to be identical- that’s how it works in Final Cut Pro. So you need the lastclip.txt and all of the contents folders that are on the P2.

Have you had any luck putting more than one card on a DVD? Can I make separate directories on the DVD, “card 1”, “card 2” and so on… putting the entire card’s file structure in the directory… would that work?

I have not tried Blu-ray backups. I have backed up to DLT which works fine and to hard drive which works well. You would need to create a master directory for each reel, then put the entire contents of the P2 within that master directly. We have a DVD coming out very soon that shows the whole FCP data workflow btw:

Just a note,
If you archive your P2’s you will not be able to re-digitize if your material goes offline. Working in a tapeless enverimont, I back up the avid media drives. They also serve as a Library for other projects, when needed.

Is that an Avid quirk? Archiving the P2 images in FCP allows easy re-ingest when clips go offline. Assuming the user hasn’t radically renamed the QuickTime files.

Yes it is an Avid quirk, when I attempted to archive and re-link P2 media I found I could not get them to be recognized. Avid wrapper around the media changes the files to drasticly.

I was just running into that with my test materials. Burning a DVD of the p2 cards materials works for putting the video into the computer but no amount of swearing would get it to re-link my sequence after I had deleted the media files.
So do you archive your P2 materials directly from the cards AND your Avid files from the media drives?
That would seem like a lot of DVDs if you did both.

I use WD my book premium at $350 for 1 TB RAID 1 mirrored drives (so you get 500GB). If my files go offline, just plug it in and keep editing, then transfer(consolidate).

Well it’s actually the same in FCP regarding relink- you can’t just relink back to the P2 contents. You have to re-ingest but from there you can relink the ingested FCP versions. Suspect the same is possible in Avid.
