You could but I think you’ll find tethering via Firewire to be quite cumbersome. P2 cards can be purchased and resold if you need the cash or rented. I cannot recommend their use over a tethered laptop highly enough. Unless you plan your film to be shot entirely on one stage from a stationary tripod.

    Thanks for the answer.

It is a really easy shoot. I only have 2 interieor locations and a 8 meter long fire wire cable.
So how do I do it? Can I just hook it up to a PC with no other software/hardware?

You would need an editing program that supports Firewire DVCPROHD. Somehow I don’t see how a $1,500 laptop and a $1,200 copy of FCP is going to be less than a P2 card rental but maybe I just don’t know the market.

If you’re using a PC laptop you should look at DV Rack HD (which was bought by Adobe and will be called OnLocation when CS3 turns up.)

If you’re renting, rent 2 cards and dump them to the laptop when they fill up. Much easier in the long run.
