I’ve made it a habit to backup P2-cards to external harddrives before importing into FCP.

But The transfer from the cards to the harddrive is painstakingly long. My setup is a Macbook Pro and a PowerBook G4 – and I’d like to use both computers at the same time – to cut the transfertime in half.
The external harddrives are connected via Firewire 800.

The Powerbook takes P2 cards through the PCMCIA slot – and transfers an 8 gb card in about 8 minutes.

Since the Macbook Pro doesn’t have a PCMCIA slot I’ve been using the AJ-PCD20 deck via USB2 and the AG-HVX200 camera via FireWire. The AJ-PCD20 took about 1-2 hours for an 8 gb card, the AG-HVX200 took 20-30 minutes.

    Any tricks? other than patience…

It obviously shouldn’t take that long. The only time that I’ve encountered such a slowdown was when I used a USB 1 slot on my G4, but the macbookpro has 3 USB2 slots so that’s not the case here. Do you have the P2 driver software loaded on the macbook? the AJ-PCD20 also has a firewire port, have you tried that?

    Shane.

Definitely don’t just “accept” those results, there’s something obviously very wrong. The PCD20, through the FW800 port, should be able to copy cards as fast as your hard disk can accept the data.

I wasn’t aware of a Firewire port on the AJ-PCD20.

I don’t normally use it, and I borrowed it from a PC-Avid setup. That setup only uses USB2, and I think the metalpanel covers the firewire port – because I didn’t see one.

When I get back to work tuesday I’ll screw the AJ-PCD20 apart and test the transfer-speed via Firewire.

    Thanks!

There’s a PCD10, which has only USB, and then there’s the newer PCD20 which added a FW800 port.

yup – the cheap bastards at work bought the version without firewire.
I think I’ll keep using my good old Powerbook and it’s PCMCIA port.

    thanks for your help!

The good old PowerBook is by far the fastest method, I can only confirm that USB (2.0 !) is sloooooow.
