I am considering changing formats and purchasing an HVX200 and I’ve noticed a hige range of prices. Going from list price down to below $2000.00 for a new in box rig. The low end of the scale looks mighty attractive, but these cameras are coming from large suppliers with 1-800 phone numbers. Can anyone enlighten me on why there is such a large range and what I need to be aware of if I purchase from someone who is selling at such a low price. What is the catch? And what will I be missing? And also what questions should I be asking.

Thanks in advance for your help,

If the price is WELL below the market norm, that means that the company selling it is most likely a gray market company. Which means that you might get the camera, but not the battery, or charger, or other standard equipment. That costs extra. Oh, and shipping and handling might cost 3 times what reputable dealers charge.

If it sounds too good to be true, it most likely is.

    There is no catch.

You simply will not get a HVX200 at that price.

Buy only from a USA Panasonic Authorized dealer.

The lowest price I’ve seen is about $5K, and $5299.00 seems about the norm

Those super-cheapo prices are from the notorious Crooklyn scam shops. It’s false advertising. Look up the article that either ZDNet or PC World did on those shops. Bottom line: if you deal with liars, crooks, and thieves, don’t be surprised if they lie to you and steal from you. Is that really someone you want to give your credit card info to?

Also look up Don Wiss’ excellent photo site that shows the storefronts for these places, and again ask yourself if you want to go giving your credit card to a place like that.

The cheapest you’ll find an HVX anywhere in the US is about $4995. Any lower than that and it is almost unquestionably some sort of deceptive scam.
